After being approved by 83% of Ohio voters in November, the crime victim's rights amendment, Marsy's law has officially gone into effect today(2/12/18).

The law was named after Marsy Nicholas, a California woman who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend back in 1983 -- and the law was pushed by the family after they had no idea that the murderer had been released on bail and confronted by him after his release. The Ohio law is designed to not only give victims, but their family members more notification about release and more rights in and outside of the courtroom.

According to Rebecca King-Newman, the staff attorney for victim's rights, "here locally this is really an expansion cause there's going to be a lot more cases that would have victims rights like at municipal court, there will be expansion of restitution opportunities and opportunities for victims to address the court and a lot of that is going to be seen at municipal court."
